What is Dunce?

Dunce is a comic strip by Jens K. Styve, drawn in Tromsø, far up in Arctic Norway. It follows JensK, his son Gustav and their dog Brego, juggling everyday life with philosophical detours and sudden leaps into fantasy. Not quite autobiographical. Not entirely made up, either.

The strip was born in 2016, when it beat 110 other entries in Dagbladet’s comic competition, and has since run daily in Norwegian newspapers. It has won the Pondus Prize and the Sproing Award, Norway’s top comics prize, was named best Norwegian comic of the decade by Serienett, and has been collected in books in Norwegian, English, French, Spanish and Finnish.

Quotes from France and Norway translated.

Dunce strip #2

Okay, the skull Jens continues for one more strip, and looking back I think I ended that idea much too quickly. I was still learning how to write a daily strip, and I had a tendency to burn through an idea and restore normality way too fast.

Later I learned that if something throws your fictonal world out of balance, you can easily stay there, enjoy it for a while. One idea, one unbalance, can carry several strips, sometimes even weeks! Back then I was almost afraid of that, my intuition leaned towards balance. I hurried to get everything back in place and move on to the next idea. I wish someone told me that early on. If you're starting a strip... I'm telling you NOW! Learn from my mistakes. Being too quick moving on, I used up an incredible amount of material in the beginning.

But this was me learning in public. That was part of the deal.

Strip 2 also introduces Børge properly, the main character’s friend and colleague. Who happens to be a fish. That became one of the rules of Dunce: visual metaphors and surreal stuff in general can easily be part of its logic.
